The finding

Across 2 April – 15 July 2026, Andalucía scored highest for all-round golf comfort (9.1/10). But the picture flips in the July heat: on summer afternoons (1–5pm) Asturias & Cantabria is the most comfortable place to play in Spain (9.5/10 at 24.0°C), while Castilla-La Mancha drops to 8.0/10 (31.3°C). In the hot interior and along the Mediterranean, the rule is the same — tee off early.

Comfort score = mean hourly golfnear.io Comfort Score (0–10) in golf hours. “Jul afternoons” = 1–5pm local in July. Higher is more comfortable. Ranked by all-day score.

When to tee off in the Spanish summer

Mornings are comfortable almost everywhere — the differences open up after lunch. In the interior and along the Mediterranean, the score falls steeply through the afternoon as the temperature climbs past 30°C; on the Atlantic north coast it barely moves. If you're playing the south in July or August, an early tee time isn't a preference, it's the difference between a pleasant round and a survival exercise.

Asturias & Cantabria holds the highest summer-afternoon comfort in Spain (9.5/10 at 24.0°C average), while Castilla-La Mancha drops to 8.0/10 (31.3°C) — the clearest case for a dawn round in Spanish golf.

How the Comfort Index is built

golfnear.io computes an hourly Comfort Score for every golf course in Spain from four weather variables — temperature, wind, UV and precipitation — on a 0–10 scale, where higher means a more pleasant round. The score peaks around 18–24°C and falls as heat, wind, strong sun or rain rise. Weather data is from Open-Meteo.

  • What's averaged: only real measured hours — no estimates or climate averages. Each region's figure is the mean score across all its courses, in golf hours (8am–6:59pm local), over the measured period.
  • “Comfortable” means a score of 6 or higher (the Good/Excellent bands).
  • Local time: the Canary Islands are treated as UTC+1 and the rest of Spain as UTC+2 — correct for the whole measured (summer-time) window.
  • A region is ranked only with at least 3 real golf courses and 2,000 measured golf-hours; smaller regions are listed as not ranked rather than given a noisy figure. Driving ranges, academies and pitch-&-putt are excluded.
  • Period & scope: this edition covers 2 April – 15 July 2026 — it reflects spring and summer conditions, not a year-round or winter average. A winter edition will follow once the November–February data has been measured.
