Pitch and putt courses in Spain are ultra-short layouts where every hole is under 90 metres — typically 40-80 metres. The full set you carry is usually wedge plus putter, which strips golf back to the two skills that decide most scorecards: short irons and putting. A round of 18 holes takes 60-90 minutes and costs €10-€25 in most cases. The format originated in Ireland but has spread across Catalonia (the Catalan Pitch & Putt Federation lists 30+ courses) and into Andalucía, Valencia and the Canaries. What's the difference between pitch and putt and a par 3 course?
Hole length. Pitch and putt holes top out around 90 metres — wedge or short-iron shots only. Par 3 courses go up to 160-180 metres, requiring mid-irons and sometimes hybrids. Pitch and putt is also more standardised: federation rules set length limits, equipment (one club plus putter), and round duration.
Do I need my own clubs for Spanish pitch and putt?
No — the format only needs a wedge and a putter, and almost every venue rents those for €5-€10. If you have your own, a 56° or 60° wedge plus putter is the complete kit. Federation-affiliated courses limit you to one playing club plus putter to keep the format pure.
Where is pitch and putt most popular in Spain?
Catalonia leads by a wide margin — the Federació Catalana de Pitch and Putt lists 30+ courses, and Catalan players have won European and world titles in the format. Andalucía, Valencia and the Canaries each have a handful of venues but nothing approaching Catalan density.
Is pitch and putt good for beginners and kids?
It's arguably the best entry point in golf. No driver, no fairway woods, no long carries over hazards — just wedge into a green and putt out. A round costs less than a cinema ticket, finishes in 90 minutes, and rewards fundamentals (grip, contact, putting line) that transfer directly to full-length golf.
