Costa del Sol for Beginners: Eight Courses That Will Not Embarrass You

Forgiving fairways, gentle greens, and reasonable green fees. The Costa del Sol courses where a 24-handicap actually has fun.

Updated April 2026 · golfnear.io

The Costa del Sol has more than seventy golf courses in a sixty-mile strip, and a confused beginner can easily end up booking a round at a Ryder Cup-style championship layout that punishes every miss. This guide picks the eight most genuinely beginner-friendly courses on the coast: wide fairways, gentle greens, manageable distances, and green fees that do not require explaining the receipt to anyone.

What makes a course beginner-friendly

Three things: wide fairways (so an off-line drive is still in play), gentle greens (so an average putt does not roll twenty feet past), and short or moderate length (so a 130-yard 7-iron actually reaches the green). Bonus points for a fair-priced practice ground and patient starters.

The eight

1. Mijas Golf — Los Olivos

Two parkland 18s; Los Olivos is the easier sister to Los Lagos. Wide fairways, no forced carries, fair price (around €60 mid-season), and a beginner-friendly atmosphere. Practice range and short-game area on site.

2. La Cala — Asia

The shortest of La Cala's three layouts at 5,400 metres. Generous fairways, low rough, and stunning views without the tourist-resort price tag. Around €70 with cart.

3. Cabopino Golf, Marbella

Slightly hilly but entirely playable. Forgiving width, sea views, friendly clubhouse. €55-75 depending on season. The best value-for-views in central Marbella.

4. Santa María Golf & Country Club, Elviria

Quieter than nearby Cabopino, narrower in places but mostly fair. The middle tees are a sensible 4,900 metres. Great practice facilities and unhurried first tee.

5. Cerrado del Águila, Mijas Costa

An 18-hole short course (par 65) designed for beginners and seniors. Carry your bag, walk it in two hours, and play three rounds on a long winter afternoon. Around €35.

6. Atalaya Old Course, Estepona

The "Old" is the easier of Atalaya's two. Mature trees, modest length and slow greens. €55-80 depending on season.

7. La Quinta, Benahavís

Three nine-hole loops; the C course is the most forgiving. Fewer water hazards than Costa del Sol average. €70-90.

8. Lauro Golf, Alhaurín de la Torre

Inland (15 minutes from Málaga airport) so cheaper than coastal courses. Beginner-friendly width, mild elevation, around €45 mid-week. Often empty in the afternoon.

What to skip if you are a beginner

Valderrama, Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, Finca Cortesín. They are stunning courses and intimidating beginners' nightmares, with green fees over €200 to remind you of the fact. Save them for when you have broken 90 reliably.
