The Best Months to Play Golf in Spain, Region by Region

Spain has good golf weather somewhere in almost every month — but never everywhere at once. Here is the honest month-by-month map.

Visitors ask "when is the best time to play golf in Spain?" as if the country had a single climate. It does not. Spain runs from the subtropical Canary Islands to the Atlantic north, and in any given month at least one region is close to perfect while another is unplayable. This guide maps the golf calendar region by region so you can match your trip to the conditions that actually matter — not just temperature, but wind, UV and crowds. For how those combine into a single number, see how the comfort score works.

The one-line answer for most visitors

If you are flying in for a golf trip and want the best all-round conditions, aim for late March to May or September to late October. In these shoulder months the southern coasts sit at a comfortable 20–26 °C, the sea is warm enough to swim, courses are in peak condition, and you avoid both the summer heat and the winter European-tourist price surge. Everything below is the detail behind that answer.

Costa del Sol and Andalucía

The densest golf coast in Europe is playable all year, but each season has a character. Spring (March–May) and autumn (October–November) are ideal: warm, dry, green fairways. Summer (July–August) is hot — 30–35 °C at midday — so locals tee off at dawn or after 17:00. Winter (December–February) is mild (16–19 °C highs) and sunny most weeks, which is exactly why it is high season for northern-European visitors. Browse all Andalucía courses.

Costa Blanca and Murcia

A notch drier and often a degree or two warmer in winter than the Costa del Sol, with lower green fees. The Costa Blanca (Alicante) and Murcia shine in spring and autumn, stay very playable through winter, and get uncomfortably hot inland in high summer. Murcia's Mar Menor also makes it the best golf-and-beach combination in the shoulder months — see our 48-hour Murcia itinerary.

Mallorca and the Balearics

Mallorca is a spring-to-autumn destination for visitors. April to June and September to October are superb. Winter golf works for residents — mornings can drop to 6 °C and rain is more frequent than on the mainland south, so it is not a reliable January golf-trip choice. Summer is hot, but sea breezes take the edge off the coastal courses.

The Canary Islands

The exception to every rule. The Canaries hold roughly 22 °C every single month, so there is no "best" season for weather — only for price and crowds. Winter (the European peak) is busiest and dearest; late spring and autumn are quieter and cheaper for the identical climate. If you want guaranteed shorts-and-shirt golf in January, this is the only Spanish region that promises it. See our full Canary Islands golf guide.

The interior and the north

Madrid, Castilla and the Atlantic north (Galicia, Asturias, the Basque Country) are summer regions for golf. May to September is pleasant; December to February brings frost, fog and the occasional course closure. Do not plan a winter golf trip here — head south instead. Our winter golf guide covers where the warmth actually is.

Green-fee seasons don't follow the weather

The counter-intuitive part: on the southern coasts, the best-value months are the hottest ones. Costa del Sol courses that charge €120 in sunny February drop to €60–90 in July because northern Europeans stay home. If you can tolerate an early-morning summer tee time, you get championship courses at half price. Conversely, the pleasant winter months are the priciest. Budget accordingly — see what golf in Spain actually costs.
